Tattoos are becoming more popular than ever before. Body art is a great way to express your personality, commemorate something special, or show off creativity. Tattoos aren’t the only thing gaining popularity. Veganism has taken off, with more people choosing to cut animal byproducts out of their life. Surprisingly, a lot of items contain animal byproducts, not just meat and dairy. One thing we’ve been getting asked a lot about lately is whether tattoo ink is vegan or not. So for all the vegans out there, this is what you should know about tattoo ink.
Is tattoo ink vegan?
It depends! Some tattoo ink is vegan while other is not. It all depends on the materials brands decide to use in their products. The good news is that more brands are moving away from using animal-derived ingredients in their products.
What animal byproducts are in tattoo ink?
People are probably surprised to learn that tattoo ink contains materials that come from animals. No, you aren’t being inked with meat and milk, but some brands do use animal materials. Nonvegan inks may contain bone char, glycerin from animal fat, gelatin from animal hooves, or shellac from battles.
Does The Village Ink use vegan ink?
Yes! Most of the ink we use in the shop is vegan. It just so happens to be what our artists prefer to use. If you are vegan though, be sure to notify us ahead of time. This way we can ensure to only use vegan ink and products on you. Since most of our artists already use vegan ink it’s not an additional hassle or charge, so don’t be afraid to ask!
What about aftercare products?
Aftercare is super important, we can’t stress that enough. A lot of aftercare products aren’t vegan, but luckily there are some vegan products out there. Be sure to ask your tattoo artist for vegan aftercare product recommendations.
Not everyone loves vegans; they can be overly passionate about their beliefs at times. But at The Village In,k we 100% support people that want to reduce animal cruelty and environmental impacts. We absolutely carry vegan ink and our artists will be able to accommodate any vegans that would like to get tattooed here. Be sure to mention it before we begin inking!
