We get people of all ages, genders, races, and religions that come into our tattoo shop for ink. While it’s not uncommon to see older people getting inked, lately we’ve been getting older people coming in for their first tattoo. A lot of them wonder if they’re too old to start getting inked and our answer is always the same- absolutely not!
No one is ever too old to get their first tattoo.
The culture around tattoos has changed a lot in recent years. Today, lots of people start getting inked young. The average age that people got their first tattoos at was 19-29 years old. However, that doesn’t mean older people can’t start getting inked. Tattoos are more acceptable in society today and have less of a stigma, leading to more people getting them younger. We’ve had plenty of middle-aged or older people come in for their first tattoo.
By far the most common reason people tell us they never got inked when they were younger was because of the stigma. Older generations were raised to believe tattoos were for criminals and would hinder them from getting a job. They weren’t completely wrong about that- the generations before us were less forgiving about body art. Today though tattoos are seen as an artistic expression and society generally doesn’t have negative views about them. Doctors, CEOs, and politicians are all sporting them.
The only thing that should prohibit an older person from getting a tattoo is for health reasons. Tattoos are safe, but they do put a strain on the body as it heals itself. People should evaluate whether their body is strong enough to handle a tattoo. There are certain medical conditions that can make getting inked dangerous. If you have concerns, discuss them with your tattoo artist and your doctor first.
Everyone, no matter their age, should feel welcome getting a tattoo. There is absolutely no such thing as being too old to get inked. The stigma around tattoos has long since faded. We’re proud to tattoo people of all ages. So whether you’re 25, 45, or 65 it’s never too late to get your first tattoo. Stop by our Toronto tattoo shop or contact us to get inked today!
